LIKES
[1] Women: All kinds of women, but he has a preference for the femme fatale type. He also prefers women that aren't too thin. If a girl stands up to him, then they are very much on his radar in a good way. His love for women has gotten in the way before, but he simply can't hold that against them.
[2] His Children: They are probably his only real emotional weakness. Guthrie has lost one son, and never wants to go through that pain again. His daughter is a pain in the neck to say the least, but no one can get angry with her but him.
[3] Guns: He used to go hunting with his muggle uncle when he was a boy, and guns have always fascinated him. He does not get trigger-happy, but he respects guns for their power and their... beauty.
[4] Travel: He can use a broom, he can apparate... Why stay in one place all the time? Admittedly most of the time he just settles down with a book and a glass of wine wherever he does end up, but a chance of scenery can work wonders.
[5] Cooking: He is a master of the kitchen, who can turn simple things into something of elegance. And dammit, he makes it look good, too, like it just came out of a five star restaurant. It's his semi-secret skill. He doesn't hide it, but why the Hell would he cook for someone that he didn't care about?
[6] Being Alone: Nothing better than settling down at the end of the day. He hates dealing with most people, though he does it more often than he's by himself. So when he is having his treasured quiet time, interruptions are usually met with an acidic remark at the least, a full-on rage attack for repeat offenders.
[7] Coffee: One in the morning, one in the afternoon. He frequents cafes more often than he does bars and the like. He prides himself on not having many vices, but women and coffee are probably the most dangerous to him.
[8] Dark Objects: Well, not only the Dark. However, those are the ones that fall into his hands most easily. He is ever intrigued in learning what people can come up with given an item and a spell to match. He is not innocent of making some of these himself, though he knows better than to sell them out to people.
[9] Dueling: It has been a good long time since he has had a good duel, but he is a rather skilled duelist. He has no real reason to fight. Occasionally he seeks out such a thing because he doesn't want to get too rusty.
[10] Bulldogs: He owns two of them, named Kiernan and Daly. They are both rather lazy and slobbery, but at his feet most of the time when he's at home.
DISLIKES
[1] The Rules: Oh yes, he was a trouble maker in school because of his tendency to ask 'well, why not?' when a rule didn't seem particularly useful. He is the same as an adult, not caring about the established moral system. No, he won't hurt people for no reason. But he doesn't see the practicing of Dark Arts as necessarily an evil.
[2] Money: Most people assume that he would be the type to sell out a friend for a handful of knuts (giggity) but the truth is, money means nothing to him. He keeps enough to do what he needs to do, what he needs to live on, but he is not driven by it.
[3] Stupid Bravery: It is quite endearing when another person does it, but Guthrie never has been the sort to put himself in danger when there is no need. He hasn't lived as long as he has by being a moron, you know.
[4] Labels: Being accused of being a Death Eater is the worst of them all. Because he's known to occasionally perform Dark Magic, people assume that he is affiliated with the Death Eaters.
[5] Narrow-Minded People: For the same reason as above. While he can be stubborn about things that he really believes in, he's flexible particularly where it comes to what is and is not possible. One can't defend themselves from something that they haven't put effort into understanding.
[6] The Unforgivables: While he is a practitioner of the Dark Arts, Guthrie would never use the unforgivables on another person unless he was forced into it. He finds them to be a rather dull solution to a problem that he could solve by playing with more overlooked spells and objects.
[7] Prejudices: Mainly because he is a half-blood, and his daughter ended up being a squib. He finds such views limiting. He is intrigued by Dark Creatures, as he wonders if with the right scientific engineering he could find a way to harness such abilities.
[8] Whiners: You know, the sort of person that has to tell everyone their sob stories as though they're competing, who tries to make every situation about them. He does not hold back his criticism of such people, finding that they are something of a berserk button for him. Everyone has problems. Why the Hell should he have to listen to them go on and on about theirs?
[9] Addictions: It seems all too common for the people that Guthrie knew when he was younger to disappear off the face of the earth because they had an addiction that rendered them unable to work or to even function. They threw their lives away for drugs or alcohol, or their thirst for power.
[10] Insomnia: He has it, big time. It has been a long time since he has gotten more than three or four hours of sleep in one night.
[11] Protection: ...Apparently. =P
BOGGART Losing another of his children.
MIRROR OF ERISED A partner (not necessarily romantic) to stand beside him. He has dealt with a lot of betrayals.
PATRONUS Jackal: For a lot of slighlty odd reasons. He is most alert and active during the dawn and dusk hours when everyone else is sleeping or just waking. His is often by himself other than his children and whatever mate he has at the time. He is the 'if you want something done right, do it yourself' kind of thinker, so this works well for him. Territorial with the ability to adapt well to surroundings. He's worked for what he has, and don't you try to take it away from him!
He only learned to summon his patronus when he was twenty-five; near the end of the wizarding war, at the age of thirty-three, he summoned his patronus to fight off dementors sent by Death Eaters who he had refused to join.
PERSONALITY Guthrie is both a very simple fellow and a complicated one. He does not follow anyone, and does not lead, either. He is his own entity. For that reason, he does not have that many enemies within the wizarding world. It is more likely that he is forgotten by people who know of his existence than anything. However, he is pretty unforgetable to those who have actually sat in the same room with him. He exudes a sort of confidence, a playful demeanor, but he's quick to anger if assumptions are made about him and his, or if he's told what to do. Ever a free spirit, Guthrie detests those who attempt to rise to a power that would crush the 'innocents' like himself. If the Death Eaters were to return he'd be much more likely to stand against them than join the ranks, but he would prefer to stay out of it.
He is a practitioner of the Dark Arts. He doesn't do it because it's frowned upon or to gain power. Guthrie merely doesn't see why if some tool is at his disposal he shouldn't use it. People who try to pull the morals card on him are ignored because Guthrie has never actually hurt another person. He hasn't even hurt himself. In his opinion people are overly quick to judge others and can't mind their own damn business. Because of his lack of fear regarding taboo subjects, Guthrie is quite knowledgeable about cursed objects, other dark witches and wizards, and dark creatures. He's studied them all out of interest, and he has a good grasp on what must be going through followers of the Dark Lords' minds. His abilities with the Dark arts was such that the Death Eaters once attempted to recruit him but... he violently refused. He has an open mind about things, personal or not. He has used the information that he knows creatively, finding new ways to use spells and potions, and inventing a few of his own. He does not want to be known for it, though, and so each success is his own. He would never want to be in the spotlight.
Guthrie is a family man. He hasn't found a woman that he cares enough for to bed and wed, but he does have children from past flings. The role of provider is important to him, and while he doesn't value money very highly, he does what he needs in order to get by. His care for others is shown in actions rather than words, and those who don't know him well might not identify a certain softness in his features for all that it means. He was forced to 'grow up' too quickly as a child, and emotional ties were viewed as a weakness. He knows now that it is not true, but it doesn't make telling someone that he loves them any easier. It makes relationships rather amusing in a way – he is constantly showing someone that he loves them in his unorthodox manner, while they're getting pissed off that he doesn't appreciate them enough. He has no trouble with the negatives, though. If he dislikes someone he's incredibly obvious about it. Sarcasm and playful banter is common for him no matter what the situation, which causes allies to grow frustrated.
He is very responsible for his actions. He's had four children, literally all of them being accidents, and yet he raised three on his own and one jointly with the mother. Similarly, if one of the dark objects he possesses were to fall into the wrong hands, he would do whatever it took to gain it back to avoid something bad happening to others.

HISTORY Guthrie was born to a muggle father and a witch mother. His father did not like the idea of the wizarding world, and so he tried to keep Gina from ever returning to it. He was incredibly possessive of his wife and his son, to the point that he would put harm to them if it meant keeping them closer. In the end, though, the expense of caring for them was so high that eventually Donald decided that however much he wanted to keep them under his thumb, it wasn't paying off for him. So he ditched them, never to be seen again. Gina was understandably upset by the ordeal, as Donald hadn't allowed her to work while she was with him. Nevertheless, she pulled it together and managed to provide for Guthrie and herself.
He saw the things that his mother went through raising him, and while he didn't have a male role model, he had instead a way that he imagined men should be toward women and their children.
A Hufflepuff when the time came to be sorted, Guthrie did indeed prove to be loyal to his best friends and to his mother who he still loved dearly. He was very intelligent, and did well in school. He didn't seem to care what others thought of him which ended up being a double-edged sword. When he was seventeen, he and his best female friend ended up sleeping together, and having a friends-with-benefits situation. The emotions were more extreme on Guthrie's end, whereas she just thought of him as a friend that she sometimes slept with. But eventually she got pregnant with his child. They were out of school when it happened, but she was still stressed about her future and wanted to get rid of the baby. Guthrie fought with all in him to raise the child himself because he had such a deep need to be a provider, to be the person that his father wasn't. In the end, he won and was able to care for baby Joseph. Things between he and his friend had soured and hurt their relationship irreparably, however, and they didn't speak to each other that often.
Joseph died at the age of twelve when he fell from his broom while out with friends. Obviously, Guthrie was devastated. But he internalized that pain as he didn't see the benefit of speaking with anyone about it. Life went on, him behaving as though he was better off than he really was. He continued to date, continued to take small jobs.
When the wizarding war came around, Guthrie intended to stay completely out of it. He had a young son to care for, another courtesy of a fling, and he didn't believe in the Death Eater message. He eventually sided with the Order simply because the Death Eaters had tried to kill him for refusing to join them. He was a reluctant ally, quick to point out the errors that the Order made, but he did his part. He acted as a bodyguard to one of the Order's younger members... which, you guessed it, led to a short-lived relationship based on 'hey, we could die from this'. Thus, along came Kayleigh. After that, he basically wanted to be left alone. He kept a relationship going with the mother of Kay for a while, but they drifted apart. These days she is married to another man, and quite happy about it. As for Guthrie, he was not through yet, and eight years ago he had his (technically) fourth child, though he does not have custody of him. Instead, he gets visitation.
His daughter proved to be a squib and is enrolled in a muggle high school. Guthrie himself hasn't changed a lot, though he was one of the first to learn that the Death Eaters were boosting their ranks.
