PERSONALITY 

Sarah is a combination of some seemingly paradoxical concepts. She was brave enough to leave her parents for a new life in the magical world, yet it took her a week to get up the nerve once she'd made the decision to ask Cobalyn to adopt her. She pushes herself hard when it comes to rehearsal, determined to see her full potential realized as a dancer, but she avoids conflict for its own sake, choosing to fight her battles only if someone is in danger or the stakes are high. 

She is extremely passionate about her dancing career, practicing on an almost obsessive level. When she does take a break, however, she enjoys flying and quidditch, which she realized relied on most of the same muscles as her ballet exercises. She is competitive, slightly impulsive, and on occasion has been known for a tendency to act before she thinks. She has a mischievous streak and a rather cheeky nature, especially when she deems someone's opinion of themselves is a bit high. She tends largely to stay out of trouble, less out of a sense of propriety and more because she is generally busy with other things. She has, however, been known to do things she otherwise wouldn't when pushed or dared as a matter of principle and pride.

Sarah was born in Wolverhampton to Mindy and Bryce Averill, placed in several dance classes from the age of five as a means of giving her something to do after school while her parents were working, Sarah fell in love with dance, though she especially enjoyed her ballet, jazz, and ballroom classes. As she got older, strange things began happening, bad grades would vanish as though they had never existed, music would play when she wanted to rehearse though there was no source to be found. When she received her Hogwarts letter at the age of eleven, it came as a complete shock to her exceptionally straight-laced parents. At first, her parents tried to destroy the letter, dismissing it as a hoax done in poor taste by a neighbor or colleague. 

But, the letters kept coming, and finally, as her parents continuously refused to acknowledge them, and Sarah became increasingly frustrated with their insistence on pretending there was nothing abnormal about their daughter, Sarah made a plan to run away, find the school, and see for herself if there was world where a person like her could belong. Her plan, however, turned out to be unnecessary. A couple of weeks before start of term, headmistress Mcgonagal sent one, Professor Hermione Granger to the Averill's door to answer any questions her parents might have about sending their eldest to the magical world. Hermione, after all, was a well-known muggleborn war heroin, and if anyone could bridge the gap, she would be the prime candidate. It embarrassed Sarah that her parents received Hermione so coldly, claiming never to have received any letters at all. It wasn't until she was about to leave that Sarah got an idea, running to her room, she located the one letter she'd managed to save. 

She presented it much like Cinderella with her glass slipper to Hermione, much to her parents chagrin. Giving Sarah a knowing look, Hermione had leaned down to hug the little girl, whispering in her ear instructions for meeting her at King's Cross on the first of September. Her parents, for their part, considered the matter absolved, and Sarah behaved perfectly over the next several days, all the while preparing for her escape. No more would she have to deal with strange looks from the neighbor kids or the snide remarks of her parents' friends. She would have a place to belong! Her sister Melissa harassed her endlessly about the woman who had come to 'take her a way to a place for weirdos'. It came as quite a surprise to Bryce, Mindy, and Melissa Averill, therefore when on the first of September their daughter's bed, and a great deal of space in her closet was found empty.

She'd used her allowance to pay for a taxi to King's Cross, and was relieved to find Hermione weighting for her, oddly between platforms nine and ten. With her new Professor's help, Sarah was able to board the train to Hogwarts with enough school supplies to get her through her first year. This raised her next problem. Since she obviously couldn't go home during the summers, she needed a place to stay. It was during that time that she discovered DIOL Dance Academy, and auditioned for their scholarship program. Since DIOL was only active in summer sessions, Sarah now had a place to lay her head during the times she couldn't be at school. However, she still had no source of income, and so over time her clothing began to show wear and she began to outgrow her dance attire. 

Cobalyn noticed her for her talent, but began watching her more closely due to obvious signs of duress. Already small, Sarah lost weight during the summers since she only ate when the school provided meals. She lived this way until the age of fourteen, when she was promoted to Cobalyn's classes. Over the course of her first semester that year, she developed a close mentor-type relationship with him. She caught him doing magic during one of their lessons, and as a result, the idea to ask him to adopt her appeared and took firm hold. It took her a full week to work up the nerve to ask, and she was still surprised when he agreed. This had required a visit to her parents, who, after five years had surmised what their daughter had done, and were happy to have her taken off their hands. It had hurt, realizing that her parents were content to pretend she had never existed. Melissa was in dance down, Melissa was not magic, Melissa was their daughter, Sarah was not. 


So it was that she moved to Cobalyn's apartment, and now lives there during winter holidays and breaks from DIOL during the summer. She loves Cobalyn very much, and considers him her father. She doesn't talk about her biological family or her life before Hogwarts and DIOL very often. As far as she and anyone else is concerned, she is Sarah Downing, and has never been anyone else.
