BOGGART A boggart faced with Alaister will vanish entirely and with its magic cause the people around him to vanish too, leaving in an eerie state of seclusion where there is nobody. This stems from a childhood trauma where he was lost in the countryside with nobody around and had to wander for hours before he was finally found.
MIRROR OF ERISED Sees his older sister alive and standing with him, holding him in a headlock with a big grin on her face, obviously laughing while he's smiling and laughing along with her. They would both be adults in the mirror, which means the mirror is sort of taking his mind's image of what she'd look like had she seen her adult years.
PATRONUS A falcon, Alaister is known for being a silent and deadly hunter, both in the pursuit of knowledge and others - he commonly employs this skill in his investigations and has a deep respect for the falcon both as a marvelous animal and because as a bird of prey if reminds him of his Ravenclaw background.
PERSONALITY
Alaister may be the nicest man you'll ever meet, constantly giving off a warm smile and acting with a politeness that doesn't really speak of a pompous upbringing but just genuine warmth. He can behave in a quirky manner at times, always wanting to investigate the most mundane and simplest of things, but normally bring him to some grand if not perplexing conclusion which he will always announce to anyone within the vicinity of him. He's always willing to listen to others and their troubles, sometimes giving advice but normally just listening and allowing them to vent themselves with somebody there to hear.

At times his warm exterior can fail as he shows an air of worry over an overly secluded area or building, but he'll soon overcome it for the sake of the person or peoples in his company and wanting to keep their morale up. When he's angry he won't become loud or yell, but rather tends to fall extremely quiet and his smile can turn almost aggressive due to the look in his eyes. Still, he tries to see the best in others and is a big believer in second chances, even for those who have done the most horrible of things. He believes if others work to do so anyone can redeem themselves, if not in the eyes of others than in their own eyes.

Never doubt Alaister's ability to step up in a fight for the protection of others, despite his usual unwillingness to partake in combat because he doesn't like to harm others, he will defend those unable to do so themselves or stand beside friends or allies in combat if the need should arise. He is very unwilling to kill, however, and if he ever does it will weigh on him heavily for a while as he tries to adjust to the unpleasant feelings that arise from it, the death of his sister had a profound effect on him and his view of human life and those who without regard for it.

HISTORY
Alaister was born as the younger sibling but first son of the Vigil family of Winchester, a prominent family in the area though their blood status had waned over the last few generations to the point they were regarded as little more than half-bloods at best by the pureblood elite of the magical world. His early life was a good one, much of his time spent playing with his older sister who always teased him in the most playful ways, but was always there to stand up for him as Alaister was a somewhat sickly child and got picked on for being smaller than children of his age would be.

As he grew up his illness was treated by the gifted healers of St Mungo's which meant eventually he was able to have a completely normal life, free of his problems and by the time he reached school age he was entirely illness free. As he was entering his first year, Laura was heading back to Hogwarts for her final year intent on becoming an auror rather than a hit wizard like her parents. Alaister was sorted into ravenclaw while his sister was a hufflepuff, this was a disappointment to him as he wanted to remain with her out of instinct of seeking her protection in unfamiliar surroundings.

Fortunately, he quickly adjusted to life as a ravenclaw. His first year was a new experience for him but he took well to it, proving himself a good addition to his house as an intellectual in his studies. He and his sister remained at the school over the Christmas break but they probably should not have, it was Alaister who had wanted to remain at the school but it was his sister who suffered because of it. He never discovered who did it, but while his sister in was in Hogsmeade someone broke into one of the shops, his sister - the would-be auror - tried to apprehend him and was killed in the ensuing fight.

When Alaister found out he was left in a state of shock and was granted leave from school which ran into the new year after the christmas break ended so that he could see his parents, but he refused to speak to them and spent much of his time in his room alone crying and being generally depressed as anyone would at his age at the loss of someone so close. He was finally snapped out of his stupor at the funeral when he broke down and began claiming it was her fault she'd died, but he said he was going to find out who did it alone if he had to.

Naturally, his parents were concerned by this but he pretty much demanded he return to school and they reluctantly let him go, seeing he wouldn't be put off or remain home any longer. His return to school was met with some distance from the few friends he'd made and seeing their reactions to him, he put on a smile and pushed ahead to put their minds at ease regarding his situation. He threw himself behind his school work, focusing on defense against the dark arts and otherwise mainly intellectual studies like history of magic, he had no intention of becoming an auror he just wanted to drink up as much as he could that forced him to think.

School passed reasonably smoothly after that but Alaister didn't let go of what he'd said at his sister's funeral, though he bottled it and kept it inside so that those around him and his parents wouldn't try to dissuade him from it. The instant he left school he began to work privately as an investigator, naturally people doubted him for his age but he proved them wrong by getting results, it was his efficiency as an investigator that caught the eye of the Order of the Phoenix. When he was approached by them he was, as you can imagine, very surprised but accepted the position within the order graciously.

His goal of finding his sister's killer has been put by the wayside some recently due to going on private investigations for the order, but it remains an eventual goal in his life as he works with the order and the ministry's law enforcement to solve crimes and other mysteries that he is both hired for and sent on by the order.
