PERSONALITY
Mateo has a distinct dislike for people who hold on to values greedily, instead of using what they have. Life, he knows, is only worth living when you throw yourself into it. Having money or lots of possessions and never using them, keeping them stashed against some future day - - that's waste and a disregard for gifts you have received. He believes (while keeping enough by to get along of course) that an overload of riches is evil in a way. If he knows someone needs something and he knows they are worth time, he will help them out. He believes in karma, so every bit of good he does with his gifts or skills means more goodness coming back to him another day.
With that in mind, his natural skills with brooms even as a child angled him to making connections with the natural world far beyond what he was taught by his parents. Getting some apprentice work with a broom crafter from age eight to age eleven, he would get teaching at home in reading and writing and math and then go for the afternoon and mostly evenings with the broom master. During this time he learned to read the wood, shape the bristles, and know which magics go with which types of materials. So he's far more connected to natural elements used for magic like woods especially.
This is also why he likes steam baths, cleansing the soul as well as part of one of the preparations for brooms of a certain nature. They feel good to him, making him feel alive so saunas and hot steam are very much a part of his life. When it came to teaching, he finds the ability to teach kids works in beautifully, giving back to the same world, the same life. In a way it was karma, just a different type. Sure, with his looks people assume he is a frequent dater, a ladies man and they assume that about his personality when in truth, he hasn't dated all that much. Mateo is the kind who gets really involved with his projects and that include kids he sees as needing that should to lean on or a little more effort for a class.- - - - -

HISTORY
Born in Rio in a very open and active household, Little Mateo was a trouble maker from the start, insisting not only on a different day from his sister, but a little distance as well. About once a week (even still when he is around at home) his mom will find a way to work in how difficult he was from the start. he wasn't a common boy either, always off rough-housing or climbing everything in sight. No, having his twin rubbed off on him and a much more gentle mind set came out over time. He enjoyed the animals his parents had, but he felt more connection to the rare and beautiful woods his father worked with, collecting bits of scraps from different finished ones for his own little collection.
He and his twin Isadora played together instead of many neighborhood games, though when they did it was still together more then not. He protected her from trouble when he could as he knew it was a guy's job, but he was far more likely to look touch, then be tough. When he was eight, he got a chance to do something he was literally fascinated with and that was to work on making magic items; brooms. His father let him apprentice to a broom craftsman in the afternoons where he would get to feel the woods, learn about the magic, and study the plants and preparations needed for actually making them brooms themselves. While he missed spending more time with his big sister, his fingers itched to glide over the beautiful finished brooms and took pride in the little he could do at his age.
When they turned eleven however, Mateo's mother took the twins to their uncle in Spain (who was the other connection in the family business; he had visited enough for the twins to trust him entirely) who used his multiple citizenship to get them into Hogwarts and, like their mother, they both ended up in Ravenclaw (a great relief to Mateo). He and his sis were life-long partners, helping and protecting each other. But their interests continued to evolve; while she became more interested in magical life, he turned more and more to the inanimate, doing a lot of study in the crafting of magic items and brooms and experimenting on his own. As his last years came up he did manage to meet up with a solitary broom craftman in the area of Hogsmeade and began to work with him in his free time. As his sister took up teaching with interest, Mateo actually went for a few trips to other broom makers (seeing their business disappearing as the great broom companies began taking over) who were quite willing to share their secrets.
Along the way he found a few very unusual magical items, many related to flying and he, listening to his sister's stories, became attached to the idea of working with kids for awhile, giving back to what he had learned from. Thus he returned to Hogwarts to take up teaching and convinced the Headmaster to let him expand the Flying classes to an actual study of more then just the broomsticks themselves. Flying classes in a classroom would never be the same again!- - - - -

Smiling, Mateo stepped into his classroom which was all packed with kids on the exercise brooms, being shaken around like mad by some, others barely causing an issue. he passed around them giving tips to some and warning to others who were getting too wild with the machines and then stepped across the thick carpeted floor to the cabinet on the far end. He unlocked one of the dark black oak cabinets, smiling to himself as he heard the activity behind him diminish. They knew this meant another unusual lesson! Picking up a book he sat on his professor's stool and waited till then ten minute exercise time had passed and everyone had checked their names off the wall chart, coming over to sit on the floor pillows around his feet.
he ignored the crushers on his left with puppylove in their eyes and spoke to the class as soon as the settled which didn't take long at all. "Very good class! Turn your books open to the third chapter and read what you see there, then we'll talk." Having seen him pick out a book, his students only had their books in their hands, their bags in cubicles on the far side of the room as normal to keep his floor space clean for class activities. When they finished mostly, and were looking back up at him, he said "Now, has anyone seen any of these objects used before? Let's take them one at a time. Druid stones?" Only two students raised their hands and he arched an eyebrow. "Flying?" and both put them back down. Mateo chuckled. "No one has seen a flying one in many generations, that was a trick question."
Several giggles arose from his young crowd which he smiled at and continued. "The discs?" No one raised their hands. "I'm not surprised. I only have one of them and it was hard to get, I assure you!" A wave of his hand (wandless magic and non-verbal spells having been required learning for his broomstick design) and out of the cabinet sailed a hand sized sic with five small indents for fingers on one side. "Now these are a very early type of flight, but they didn't allow flight itself. What they did was create a fixed point for the disc to sit on when you said a word" he let go and it sat there in the air. Standing up on his stool carefully he stepped onto the disc as it sat in the air to "Oooo" from the class. Carefully stepping back to the stool, he said "So, can anyone tell me what you could do with this that might make it worthwhile?"
Several hands shot up and he smiled, turning to point to the first and then around in order. "Hiding above head level?" "Muggle magic trick?" "Sir? How is it flying if they can't move?" "Hang on to that thought a moment, Robert." Finally a hand was raised tentatively as most of the rest dropped their hands, not knowing what the answer could be. The very shy girl said "If you had several of them you could walk between building tops." His face broke out into a grin of congratulations as the class got it by the way their eyes widened. "Excellent! Yes, five points to the Ravens. Good thinking, Ms Patoulie. In fact, they were used as stairs as well by wizards sneaking into people's homes to steal from them."
As he removed the disc from the air he pointed out the finger tips and put his hand in them, muttering something under his breath and it stayed there. He then demonstrated by placing his hand above his head and when it stuck to the air, he pulled himself up one handed, to the delight of the ones with crushes and to the boys who whistled at what he could do. He let himself back down and nodded before he continued. "Now Robert, as to your question..."
